Some free tips on how to pass your driving test.

Essentially, there are two main skills which you need to have mastered for you to be able to pass your driving test, the first of these is your ability to handle and control the car, and the second skill is your ability to master traffic and road craft.

From a very early age most modern children are exposed to the driving skills of their parents. We as driving instructors often observe, almost genetic traits, in some of our students. On many occasions when I have been teaching the son of a taxi driver, once the student has mastered car control, you often work on the bad habits inadvertently absorbed by the son.

The first hurdle which the learner driver needs to overcome before he can set his practical driving test is to pass the theory test. The theory test focuses on the latter part of the skills which are required for the modern driver. It is obvious that it is almost the case of starting at the end to be able to master car control. You need to have a very sound grounding of your theory course material and a good understanding of Hazard perception before you can start driving on the public roads.

The ability of the student to be able to anticipate and plan pending traffic situations while he is driving is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, in the United Kingdom there are very few open spaces in which to start off the new learner driver. As the teaching needs to take place, in the greater majority of cases for all the driving teachers out there in the United Kingdom, on public roads in traffic the young learner driver is not afforded the opportunity to gain car control skills before having to deal with traffic, road signs and complex junctions. It is therefore extremely important that the learner driver has an adequate knowledge of the Highway code and its contents before embarking on their first driving lesson.

The main three elements in the practical driving test on which the student will be evaluated are;
1, car control,
2, accuracy of road use and space and
3, their ability to observe fathom and react appropriately and safely, with due consideration to other road users.

All the while driving within the confines of the law.

There is no shortcut or quick fix to this. For all the criticisms we may have in regard to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) the the standard of the driving test in the United Kingdom is considered to be one of the highest in the world.

It is therefore extremely important for the learner driver when he is about to embark on his driving test that he has absolutely mastered car control. The extent of traffic, road signs and junctions which he needs to deal with on his practical driving test does not allow him the luxury of having his mind occupied with car control. It is an essential element of being able to pass this test, and to be a consistently safe road user, that the learner driver must be in a position to focus all his attention on the situation he faces on the road. If the learner driver is still in the process of spending too much time and thinking on the elements of car control then the likelihood that he will not be able to deal with the road and its hazards are highly likely.

For car control to be completely natural the learner driver will have had to spend, under normal conditions, in excess of 40 hours behind the wheel. It is my experience, and also backed up by extensive research, that there are very few people who have the natural dexterity to be ready to sit this practical driving exam in less than 40 hours of driving.

Using the National statistics, driving test centre pass rates range from 33 to about 43% per occasion, or incident in which a driving test is taken. Now for the really bad news, statistically the question then is what are the chances of an average person, under normal conditions, to pass the practical driving test the first time? If you work out the stats, in real terms, the average person under normal conditions in the United Kingdom will have an 80% chance of having passed their driving test in 3 tries. Therefore, statistically only between 15 and 20% of students actually manage to pass their driving test on the first sitting.

It is therefore extremely important for the student to find a good driving instructor who the learner driver can consult and rely on to teach the learner driver good and proper practice.

It is in the best interests of the student, potential driver, and all other road users that the standards and ability of the learner driver meet the basic critical criteria as set out by the Driving Standards Agency.

Where you take your test should not be critical as the learner driver should be able to demonstrate his ability at any test centre. Some local knowledge is obviously an advantage but the driving examiners do tend to take into account when the student is unfamiliar with a specific area.

The consideration of where to take your practical driving test is normally governed by your location and the availability of tests. Fortunately, those living in London, because of the density of the population, have a relatively large number of test centres to choose from. The main problem is that there are no test centres in central London, therefore, these students have to use public transport to reach the vicinity of the test.

Often when students, based in London, have to decide where to take their tests they will use criteria such as the test centres pass rate. The predominant question should be governed more by the quality of the driving school and the driving instructor that they choose. A driving instructor will have a very great influence on the ability of the student, firstly to drive safely and effectively and secondly to pass their test.

Students, need to consider the above facts very carefully, and should not attempt a driving test unless they have adequately prepared for the test. It is a lot cheaper to do a mock test with a good driving instructor to determine whether you are ready or not to do the test. When deciding the considered preference being associated with the aspect as to pass rates and the associated test routes. ( Please refer to our discussion above regarding the pass rates and your ability to pass the practical driving test as discussed above in this article.)The argument remains that if you are at test standard the test route should not effect your drive and ability to pass the practical driving test. Different test centres however have different features and the DSA published statistics will in effect have influence on the degree of difficulty of the test and its associated route/s.

  • When you take your driving test you must consider aspects such as:Do you know the area where the driving test will be conducted and where you will be taking the practical driving test?
  • How will the test route effect your overall performance on the test? Wanstead for instance has many large roudabouts and multi-lane roads in its routes, Chingford has conjested roads, Loughton has high speed narrow lane work, Enfield has a predominately conjested area with open roads in places. Local knowledge can help you op your test, there is no doubt about that.
