Combo Driving Course
The combo driving course is essentially designed with the prime objective of empowering and enabling a parent relative or friend (Mentor) of the learner driver to assist and supervise him/her while s/he is learning to drive.
By making available course and study material specifically designed to facilitate this process, under the supervision and guidance of specifically trained ADI’s.
Cheap Learner driver Insurance is an essential part of being able to do this course.

The process of doing a combo course would involve a set routine of primary instruction by the ADI, where it would be preferable for the Mentor to attend the initial stages of tuition in each module. In the first module there would be no test, unless the learner driver has already mastered the primary skills of clutch control, moving off and stopping.
To make the course more effective it would be of great advantage if the Mentor could attend the final hour of each lesson. This would give the ADI an opportunity to give the Mentor feedback on problem areas the student may be having. It would also benefit the Mentor to ensure that the proper teaching methods and procedures as required by the driving standards agency (DSA) are implemented. There is a further advantage in as much as it refreshes the knowledge of the Mentor and brings his skills set in line with current practice and progress.
The supervision elements by the ADI should be assessed along the following lines;
Primary assessment; control – all aspects of control fall within this category, and may be defined within the auspices of vehicle control in all its aspects (clutch, appropriate gear, speed, steering etc)
Secondary assessment; accuracy- the ability to place the vehicle within the confines and restrictions as imposed by the available space for manoeuvring and moving, the vehicle to achieve a specific objective (correct assessment of available space, adequate clearance, driving between the lines etc)
Tertiary assessment; safety and observation – the correct interpretation and proper adherence to the rules of the road, road signs, road markings, traffic lights and roundabouts etc.
The Combo Course.
Mentor and student (p) (3-5hrs);
Preparation for module 1; Mentor will explain the various controls inside the car to the student.
Read up and explain how the clutch works, why it is needed and what it is used for.
Lesson plan, module 1; (ADI) (3hrs)
Access knowledge and discuss all the controls.
Controls, cockpit drill, mirrors, moving off and stopping.
Mentor and student (1) (3-5hrs);
Revise module 1; moving off and stopping should be done in a quiet area, where there is a lot of space, the Mentor needs to be extremely attentive and take total responsibility for safety (If the facilities are not available this practice may have to be done under the supervision of the ADI.)
Lesson plan, module 2; (ADI) (4hrs)
Asses progress on module 1. Sign off or recommend further practice.
Junctions, turning left and right, light controlled junctions and roundabouts.
Teach reversing, reverse bay park and turn in the road.
Mentor and student (2) (6hrs or more);
Practice reversing in a quiet area, and then the Bay park and the turn in the road. Start with basic junction practice, emerging turning left and right, then crossroads and turning into a minor road from a major road.
Lesson plan, module 3; (ADI) (4hrs)
Evaluate and assess practice sessions, reversing, bay park and turn in the road. Extended revision of moving off, stopping, junctions and cross roads.
Discuss and teach all aspects of roundabouts and pedestrian crossings.
Terminate the lesson with a quick introduction and practice of the emergency stop.
Mentor and student (3) (6hrs or more);
Continued practice on reversing, Bay park and the turn in the road. Practice using junctions of all kinds and start to do extended roadwork with the learner. Gradual introduction to more difficult road and traffic conditions. Be particularly aware of the proper approach to roundabouts, junctions of all kinds and pedestrian crossings.
Lesson plan, module 4; (ADI) (4hrs)
Evaluate and assess practice sessions, general drive for about 40 minutes exposing the learner to a wide variety of junctions, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings.
Teach and assess meeting traffic, planning and anticipation.
Teach the left reverse on the corner. Reassess the emergency stop.
Mentor and student (4) (5hrs or more);
Continued practice of the manoeuvres already covered.
The learner should now start to get proficient with their road craft, and most important of all they should start doing more and more independent driving. The Mentor now needs to change his role from that of being a teacher and intensive supervisor to that of coaching. This is sometimes a very difficult mental approach change for a Mentor.
Lesson plan, module 5; (ADI) (4hrs)
Evaluate and assess by doing a mock test with the student lasting approximately 40 minutes. Do not interrupt the student while they driving only interfere in cases which could be dangerous or hazardous. The student should now be approaching an independent driving stage and the most important skill set to focus on now should be anticipation and planning.
Teach the parallel park and introduce the student to dual carriageway driving. Before going on to the dual carriageway be sure that the student has a firm grasp on the use of mirrors and the interpretation of how to evaluate where and how cars in adjoining lanes or located by the effective use of the mirrors.
Mentor and student (5) (4hrs or more);
The student should be at a independent driving phase and the Mentor should be quietly but effectively attentive of the actions of the student but keep their interference to an absolute minimum. Continual practice on all the manoeuvres leaving the driving process in the hands of the student as much as is possible.
Lesson plan, module 6; (ADI) (2hrs)
One hour mock test covering all of the manoeuvres. Detailed analysis of faults and corrective action teaching where necessary.
Mentor and student (6) (4hrs or more);
The same as 5 above.
Lesson plan, module 7; (ADI) (2hrs)
One hour mock test, covering all the manoeuvres. Detailed analysis of faults and corrective action teaching where necessary.
The proficiency of the student will determine whether any further lessons are required by the ADI?
A good way to evaluate the readiness of the student for their final driving test is the following, they should be able to drive up to a situation where they need to do a manoeuvre, complete the manoeuvre without any faults on their first try and drive off. They should also be able to drive without any major or serious faults for periods of 60 minutes or more. It is imperative that the student is able to do this on an independent basis.

CarCaptain live chat with Alex;
CarCaptain: How can I help you?
Alex: Hi. I am currently looking through your website, and have a few questions. I am a 20 year old beginner, who wants to get a driving licence. I have not driven before and I have a few free weeks in summer. I want to attend an intensive driving course and get a licence as soon as possible. What are my options with you? I have heard that on average I will need 40 hours?
CarCaptain: The best course for a beginner is a 43 hour intensive course. Basically, you would tell us when you want to do the course and we will make all the arrangements. We would also need to know whether we need to help you get through the theory test, and book the test for you.
Alex: Ok, during those 43 hours, will I also be taught theory? Sorry I am not very familiar with the system. And do you arrange the tests?
CarCaptain: Normally, for most people it is simply for us to provide the material which is required for your theory test. This consists mainly of a DVD set which has all the questions and hazard perception tests on it. This along with a highway code is normally sufficient for the person to be able to do the required study to enable them to pass the test.
CarCaptain: P.S.the 43 hours is normally divided into 40 hours of driving tuition and three hours allocated to the day of the test.
Alex: Ok. So, do you arrange the tests? Time etc. And do you provide some sort of warranty? I know some intensive driving schools warranty for you to pass lets say theory, or they offer an extra free week of tuition?
Alex: Also, where are you based?
CarCaptain: Yes we do arrange all the tests if you require us to do this. We cannot, nor can anybody else guarantee that you will pass either the theory test or the driving test. As for us to be able to guarantee this we would have to bribe the examiners. Most of the time when companies guarantee you a pass they will delay your next test to such an extent that it is not practical to wait the time for the test. In our experience the greater majority of people are quite capable of passing the theory test on their own accord. If someone needs to use valuable driving time for theory test tuition we do not believe this is in the best interests of the student.
CarCaptain: We are based in and around London. On our books we have in excess of 98 driving instructors all approved by the DSA.
Alex: Ok, I live near Camden. Do you have anyone close?
CarCaptain: To cover you for Camden would not be a problem.
Alex: Ok, thank you very much. Generally what is your success rate with those courses?
CarCaptain: Our success rate is very close to 100% for our students. Normally a student has a better than 80% chance of passing their practical driving test after an intensive course. Less time is spent in tuition as an intensive course is very much more effective than hourly driving lessons.
Please view the following article;

CarCaptain: Feel free to call us at any time if you need any further information.
Alex: I will call you in the next 10mins to arrange everything. Thank you very much!
Many of the clients that we help have at one time or another been told that it is impossible to get their full driver’s licence in a short space of time. Friends and family who passed their tests many moons ago may think that an ongoing course of weekly lessons is unavoidable. Other driving schools often panic when asked if everything can be completed within a week or so and claim ” it can’t be done”. (LINK> “Why do an Intensive course (article)? <LINK )
However, at CarCaptain we do this all the time, all it takes is a bit of dedication on our behalf to ensure that your wish lists are fulfilled and deadlines met. (LINK> What we need to know to be able to plan and arrange your chance to get your licence within 14 days of having contacted us? <LINK)
All theory and practical driving tests in the UK are sold by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and all of these tests are invigilated over by an examiner employed by the DSA. Currently in London the average wait for a theory test is around three weeks, for a practical test this stretches to ten weeks. For anyone who wants to get their licence quickly finding a cancellation is a must because we are constantly in touch with the DSA either through the WEB or directly our staff are monitoring developments for other student requirements in similar situations. Of course cancellations can be booked by anyone but most of our clients do not have the time and resources that we have to be searching on the DSA’s website night and day, so we do it for them. At CarCaptain we have the benefit of knowing what is the best time of day to look for a last minute test, what test centres are busier than others and what areas are better to learn in. This means that we can always find our client a test, however much of a rush they are in. Just put us to the test!
To give you some idea of the process behind arranging a short notice (Fast Track) intensive course please see our guide below;
Step 1) You ring to inquire about our courses, we email you details of the course you are interested in and request the information we need from you to confirm your booking. You also pay a deposit (the amount depends on what length of course you are taking)
Step 2) We post you a copy of the highway code and a hazard perception CD ROM so that you can prepare for the theory test, this can be delivered the next working day and your theory test can be booked for as soon as two days time.
Step 2 CarCaptain) – At this point we will be periodically checking the theory test booking service for a last minute cancellation, tests become available all of the time due to people being unable to attend – also if there is an extremely high demand for tests the DSA very often create a few new ones to prevent a backlog.
Step 3) Once the theory test has been successfully passed we will concentrate on finding a practical test. You can start your lessons the day of your theory test if you would like to, this speeds up the process if you have a lot of hours to fit in before your desired practical exam date.
Step 3 CarCaptain) As soon as we receive the theory certificate number which you are given immediately after passing your theory test we start looking for a practical test cancellation. The DSA put many new tests on their online booking service very early in the morning and somebody from CarCaptain is always around to grab them – this is the time of day we find most of our late notice tests. Most cancellations are for 2-3 days time which gives you enough time to finish your course so that you are test ready. If you are not happy with the date we have found we will recommence our search and find you another one!
Lots of different circumstances warrant taking a last minute intensive course, sometimes jobs depend on it or our clients are only in the UK for a matter of days. Other times people have had enough of learning to drive and just want to get it over and done with. Last minute courses are very popular with business men and women who cannot afford to take more than a few days off work and with teenagers who want to get their licences’ during their half term holidays.
Whatever your situation we can definitely help you to get your licence in under two weeks. If you would like any further information on any of the courses please feel free to contact us;

CarCaptain driving school specialises in designing an intensive course for the learner driver in accordance with his/her scheduled availability and requirements. The first decision the Learner driver has to make is as to whether they want an intensive course which will put them onto a Fast Track method of obtaining their driving licence. (14 days from first contact to licence.)
The decision tree for this type of Fast Track Intensive driving course will go along the following lines;
- Have you obtained your provisional driving license from the DVLA?
- What tests need to be taken, theory test, – practical driving test?
- How many hours of driving have you completed; how many hours are under formal tuition ~ from a registered driving instructor (ADI)? How many hours of informal driving instruction ~ have you received from the Dad, Mom friend or Girlfriend etc..?
- Have you done any Practical driving tests previously, how many and what where the things you failed on?
- When are you available, and/or when do you want to start the course?
- What times are you available for the structured Intensive (Crash) course?
- When do you want to do your test or what time restraints govern the date by which you have to have your test completed?
What the CarCaptain team will do once they have all the above information;
- Arrange to send you the course material you require for your course.
- Match you up with the Test Centres that suit your place of residence or the place where you will be staying while you are on your Fast Track intensive driving course.
- Match you up with a CarCaptain DSA approved driving instructor. (ADI) To suit your Fast Track intensive driving course and to guide and help you every step of the way.
- Book all the Tests you need to suite your schedule and Diary.
CarCaptain specializes in getting you a short notice test and Fast Track course to the requirements of the demanding professional student who realizes that time is money and quick finish is cheaper and much more cost effective and above all rewarding.
The impossible just takes a little longer to do.
